art & kitsch in Cd'A
I took a trip to Couer d'Alene last week to visit a friend and help set up her art show. the city is pretty nice, despite the touristy atmosphere and the overabundance of kitsch-y art shoppes in the downtown district. this doesn't mean that it isn't good kitsch or that there are no real artists in the area, I am merely reporting. the following are some pictures from my wandering for you to enjoy.

[above] a screen-printed design composed from old technical and catalog illustrations for a band in Seattle (the Globes, I think). at the art-show opening I met the mother of one of the band's members and one of his friends (who co-designed the packaging-- it's also a recycled paper sleeve).

the two preceding images here are pieces I found at an antique shoppe-- and I mean shoppe. it was a step above the typical "pile of odds and ends from bygone years" to be found in small, closet-like "antique shops"-- but only a step (the owner gets to be particular because CdA is a tourist town, afterall). nonetheless, the landscape is ok and the portrait of some prissy Prussian hero is nice, but I think it's begging for a speech bubble and a snarky one-liner, eh?

yes; the ugly mug with the facial hair is me-- Amy is in the middle (my friend who makes machines for memory) and my ride up to CdA, /chauffeur for the weekend and haphazard tour-guide, Jasmine, is on the right. Jasmine and I were delighted to be there and Amy was just as pleased to have more friends at the show and behind the scenes (I helped hang it, Jasmine was in charge of morale).
